Musashi Kihara aspired to become a barista while studying in the United States after coming into contact with the specialty coffee culture. After returning to Japan, he opened Woodberry Coffee Roasters in Yoga in 2012. Since then, he has grown to run five shops in Daikanyama, Shibuya, Ogikubo, and Gakugeidaigaku. His flagship store in Ogikubo, which opened in 2020, is a roastery that doubles as a coffee stand and training lab. As a new initiative, he started direct trade from El Salvador to return fair prices to producers.
